Distance and Route from Chennai to Ooty

The journey from Chennai to Ooty is approximately
540 to 570 km depending on the route, taking around 9 to 11 hours by car including breaks.

There are two main route options:

Route 1 — Via Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Mettupalayam (Recommended)

Distance:
~540 km | Time: 9 to 10 hours

The most popular and direct route. You take NH 44 out of Chennai through Vellore, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri, then join the Salem bypass toward Mettupalayam. From Mettupalayam, you climb the famous Ooty Ghat Road — a 36-km stretch of hairpin bends through dense Nilgiri forest that is one of the most scenic drives in South India.

Route 2 — Via Bangalore

Distance:
~570 km | Time: 10 to 11 hours

A slightly longer route that passes through Bangalore (Bengaluru) before heading toward Mysore and then to Ooty via Gudalur. This route adds kilometres but avoids some of the narrower Salem roads. It’s a good option if you’re starting from North Chennai or if someone in your group wants to stop briefly in Bangalore.

Our recommendation: Route 1 via Krishnagiri and Mettupalayam is faster and more scenic. The ghat road section from Mettupalayam to Ooty is the highlight of the drive.

Travelling with VDP Travels means you have a professional driver who knows when to slow down, which lanes to avoid, and how to navigate safely in low visibility.

Practical Tips for Your Chennai to Ooty Trip

Start by 4:30 AM to 5:30 AM.
The Ooty Ghat Road is best driven in daylight. Starting early from Chennai means you hit the ghat road around mid-morning — plenty of daylight for the scenic climb, without the afternoon tourist rush at the top.

Carry warm clothing — even in summer. Ooty temperatures can drop to 8°C to 12°C at night and on misty mornings, even in May and June. A light jacket or sweater is essential. Children and elderly travellers especially need warm layers.

Ghat road safety. The Mettupalayam–Ooty ghat road has 36 sharp hairpin bends. Our drivers are experienced with this route year-round, including during the monsoon. Avoid using the ghat road after dark wherever possible.

Book hotels well in advance. Peak season (April to June and October to January) sees Ooty hotels fill up fast — often weeks in advance. Weekends in the cool season require booking 2 to 3 weeks ahead.

Book Toy Train tickets early. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is extremely popular — tickets sell out days or weeks in advance. Book online via IRCTC{:target=”_blank”} as soon as your trip dates are confirmed.

Carry cash. Smaller restaurants, homestays, and local vendors near Ooty’s attractions often prefer cash. ATMs are available in Ooty town, but queues can be long during peak season.

Respect the forest rules. Mudumalai and Avalanche Lake require official permits. Do not enter without them — it’s both illegal and unsafe. Check the Tamil Nadu Forest Department{:target=”_blank”} website for current permit procedures.

Avoid plastic. Ooty, especially around the forest and lake areas, has strict rules against single-use plastic. Carry your own water bottle and reusable bags.
